Have you ever stood on a railroad and noticed how the steel tracks seem to come together in the distance? Even though the convergence looks real, somehow, we know that it is an illusion. We know if we keep traveling down the railway, we will never come to the point where the rails touch. But the illusion remains- as if in defiance of what the facts tell us. 

Look at the picture of the mountain lake. 

See the highest peak?

How far away is it?

50, 20, 75, or maybe 100 miles away?

Good guesses, all. According to your perception, you have estimated the distance relative to your position to the mountain. You are perceptive.
